Chesley Sullenberger is now a retired airline captain who successfully landed a Airbus A-320 on the hudson river after a bird strike, all 155 passengers and crew survived. He now suffers from PTSD (post traumatic disorder) and speaks to large groups about keeping a positive view on life and understand why we should keep fighting in life. He also talks about airline safety and investigates along with the NTSB (National Transportation board) to figure out aircraft disasters. He is also co-author with the book "Highest Duty" now called Sully, this book was written 6 months after this accident. The book sully talks about his early life and all of his accomplishments leading up to flight 1549 . He then made a second book called Making a Difference: Stories of Vision and Courage from America's Leaders. This book also involved all of his accomplishments, but more so why he was thankful everything went the way it did, his co-pilot ( Jeff Skiles) once commented " the only thing i would wanted to change was to do this in June.
All of the things that they did were to save the lives of the passengers on board flight 1549, yet after the incident they had the NTSB to investigate, the story that they had came from is that he could have successfully landed the aircraft to another airport(s) safely, with the plane in tact. That test was only proven by simulators, not by human fact. On the day of the court hearing on whether or not to allow Mr.Sullenberger continue to fly as a captain or not was decided on that day. The trail was held on June, 9, 2009. This was a multiple day trial. Mr. Sullenberger had requested that they do a live playing of the simulation to show what was happening, and also asked that there be a 30 second delay after the bird strike, even though he and his crew had a 208 second delay. After they did the simulations at multiple airports, they had all gotten the same response... that the water landing was the only way to go, this is what he had to do to save everyone aboard that plane, and yet some were second guessing him. This book shows how his wisdom, intelligence, and skill all came into play. Remove him from the equation and everything would've gone south.
